Why study in the United Kingdom?

Home to some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, the United Kingdom continues to be at the forefront of educating the world’s brightest minds.

The UK has a long history of welcoming students from all around the world. The large population  of international students in the UK, about 20.7% of the total student population, demonstrates the UK’s attractiveness as a leading study destination.

Here are the top five reasons why the UK is an excellent study destination:

High-Quality Education

When it comes to academic reputation, universities in the United Kingdom consistently perform well in various world rankings. In fact, 16% of the world’s top 100 universities are in the UK, according to the 2022 QS World Rankings.

The UK government consistently upholds strict education regulations to ensure that the country’s academic standard remains competitive on a global scale. Innovative teaching methods are combined with traditional lectures to develop students’ critical thinking and skills. Popular programs include business, science, and research courses. Regardless of which course students choose, degrees in the UK are considered prestigious and graduates are in high demand.

Post-study work opportunities

The UK government has recently launched the Graduate Route Visa, a post-study visa that provides students with an opportunity to remain in the UK after earning their degrees to seek employment. Under this arrangement, bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates can now work in the UK for up to two years, while doctorate degree graduates can stay for three years.

International students can also gain extensive training while studying through internships as part of their course. A maximum of 20 hours per week during term time whilst full time work is permitted during the university holidays and on formal work placements.

These initiatives by the government help further boost the employability prospects of UK graduates.

Shorter degrees

One of the unique features of a UK degree is its shorter length of study. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, undergraduate degrees are typically three years in length whilst in Scotland they are four years.  A UK masters degree is of a standard one year duration right across the four nations.

Excellent value for money

The shorter duration of university study in the UK compared to other global study destinations helps reduce the cost of UK higher education for international students.

Students should also consider the location of their study as living costs may vary in some parts of the UK. Studying in London, for instance, can be less affordable compared to studying in smaller cities.

International students can also avail themselves of financial aid offered by UK universities and third-party institutions such as NGOs and government agencies. Fundings may either cover tuition fees in full or reduce them. Some scholarships base their assessment on the student’s economic situation, while others use academic or talent-based merit.

A multicultural experience

With nearly 500,000 students coming to the UK each year, students will be able to engage in a friendly environment amongst diverse cultural backgrounds. Students can thrive in a diverse community where they can learn more about other nations and their unique traditions.

The UK itself is an interesting place to visit where students can explore art galleries, historical landmarks and local festivities to enrich their cultural knowledge. International students will not only gain an affordable, world-class education but will also be exposed to global perspectives and great opportunities outside their academic studies.
