Southern Cross University Melbourne has experienced a significant growth in enrolment as of March 2019 compared with the same period last year and as such, has commenced expansion plans for the campus. The actual renovation work will begin in June.
According to Debbie Aarons, director of Student Services at Southern Cross University, the renovation will not interfere with classes since it will be done in a new level of the building that’s currently not accessed by the campus. “Renovations will take place in stages and after hours so as to accommodate the daily operations. There should be no disruption to the operational activities,” she elaborates.
There will be a number of brand new student spaces across two levels of the campus, including social and quiet spaces at Level 1 and a Lunch Room with microwave ovens, vending machine and mini-fridge. The renovation will include quiet study nooks, study booths, more computer areas and prayer/relaxation rooms.
The Games Area will be equipped with more foosball and table tennis tables. A large multi-purpose Activity Centre and more classrooms will be added at Level 6. An open plan Student Lounge will likewise be added. Renovation will be done in stages with the first stage at Level 1 expected to be completed in August.
Responding to student feedback
Aside from the need for more classrooms, Aarons reveals that the plans are being implemented in response to student feedback for an on-campus quiet study area with computer access, incorporating a smaller break out area for tutorial and/or discussions as well as a larger, more modern student breakout area.
While careful planning has been undertaken to ensure that there will be no disruptions to students’ daily activities, Aarons is encouraging students to approach the campus management should they encounter issues that may affect their studies.
